Why buy Teff Hay in Compressed Bales?
It’s actually safer for the animal vs. 2 or 3 String bales.
Teff grass is very soft, the leaves can actually be sharp. We have found that longer stemmed grass, especially in conventional 2 string or 3 string bales can lead to those leaves cutting or chaffing the sides of an animals mouth!
Low Sugar Teff Hay vs. Low Sugar Orchard Hay
Both of these hays are low sugar options, but orchard grass can be extremely high in protein and is very soluble in general. What this means is that when feeding orchard grass, the animal has a much higher overall feed intake than Teff Hay which means it could be consuming more sugar overall (as intake increases).
Why is Teff Hay a better feed choice over Low Sugar Timothy
Washington Timothy tends to be the lowest sugar at (10 = 12% Sugar). For many animals, this is still too high! Teff is typically 6 – 8 % Sugar and can actually be softer than Timothy!
Is all Teff Hay Low Sugar?
Overall Teff Hay is Low sugar (Less than 15% NSC) – but for the benefits of a healthy diet it needs to be under 10% NSC.
We have test Teff as high as 12% sugar, so timing of when the grass is cut and it’s maturity play vital roles!
